Juniper Research (News - Alert) , a reputed analyst firm, was founded in 2001 by the Wireless Industry Consultant Tony Crabtree, in the midst of the telecoms and dot-com crash. It provides research and analytical services to the global hi-tech communications sector, providing consultancy, analyst reports and industry commentary.
A new report from Juniper Research, which discusses the mobile voice market, analysing and projecting the market for the entire mobile voice ecosystem and how it will develop over the next five years has conclcuded that in a span of five years, the number of mobile VoIP minutes will rise from 15 billion minutes in 2010 to 470.6 billion by the year 2015.
Although the mobile VoIP traffic is estimated to rise steadily in all the regions during this period, the rise will be particularly visible in the developed markets, because of the increasing 3G and 4G networks.
Voicing the concern of mobile operators, who feared losing traffic to Wi-Fi networks, Anthony Cox (News - Alert), Senior Analyst at Juniper Research admitted that Wi-Fi Mobile VoIP was potentially damaging to operators as the traffic bypassed mobile networks totally. The loss in revenue would be in the region of $5 billion globally by 2015.
Other options for mobile VoiP carriage are via carrier alliances with mobile VoIP providers, or through an app downloaded to the handset or smartphone.
The report also published other interesting findings. According to it, the traditional operators in the developed markets would overlook the rivalry and go ahead and forge partnerships with VoIP providers.
As far as revenues were concerned, the report indicated that revenues from circuit switched voice was bound to decrease gradually over the next five years, and the demand for HD voice and advertising based mobile services would not see any dramatic increase.
Cox painted a not very rosy picture for mobile operators. With mobile VoIP being the hot topic of discussion ever since Skype's deal with Verizon (News - Alert), Operators seem to have different views about the benefits of mobile VoIP.
Some operators, Cox said, were of the opinion that particularly in emerging markets, in spite of going overboard about the benefits of mobile VoIP, total acceptance would be sluggish, as it would represent loss of control over their individual networks.
